Bondage yoga is yoga with restraints: one partner holds a floor pose while the other adds a blindfold, soft cuffs or one simple tie, then guides, praises and teases them. Whether you call it bondage yoga or yoga bondage, the kink is the stillness: the pose holds you in place, and your partner decides what happens while you stay there.
It isn't rope acrobatics. Everything here stays on the floor, nobody gets lifted, and nothing goes near the neck.
Any genders, any pairings: either of you can be the one who's held.

What bondage yoga is
One of you holds a pose (the bottom); the other makes staying still very hard (the top) with a blindfold, cuffs or one tie at the wrists or ankles, plus words, fingertips, mouths and toys. Think light bondage on a yoga mat; some call it BDSM yoga, kinky yoga or kinky partner yoga. Switching is half the fun.
Bondage, binds and bandhas: three different things
Yoga has its own bondage:
- A bind is a pose where you clasp your own hands around a limb or behind your back.
- A bandha is a body "lock" from hatha yoga, named from a Sanskrit word meaning a bond or a catching hold: a squeeze at the perineum, the belly drawn in under the ribs, or the chin tucked toward the chest.
- Bondage in yoga philosophy is what yoga sets out to loosen. One early Buddhist text uses the word yoga itself for four bonds that hold people back: sensual pleasure, being, opinions and ignorance.
This page is about the kinky kind.
What it isn't
No workout promises, nobody off the floor, nothing head-down while tied, and nothing on the neck or in the way of breathing.
Why bondage and yoga work so well together
A yoga pose is already a restraint: you hold a shape, stay still, get watched and get corrected. If a teacher saying "stay right there" ever gave you a tiny thrill, you get it. Add cuffs, and the thrill stops being tiny.
Bottoms describe the pleasure of handing over every decision; tops, the pleasure of a body that stays where they put it and answers every fingertip.
Plenty of people fantasize about being held still. Of 1,516 adults surveyed in Quebec for a 2015 Journal of Sexual Medicine paper, 52.1% of women (about half) and 46.2% of men had fantasized about being tied up for sexual pleasure, and in a nationally representative US survey (PLoS ONE, 2017), at least one adult in five had been tied up by a partner or had tied someone up. Nobody has counted how many bring bondage to yoga (see the research).
Before you start: talk, signals and setup
How to bring it up
Keep it light: "Yoga tonight? New rule: you hold the poses, and I hold you." Unsure? Each of you can take the free Kink Test, and a couples match shows nothing but the yeses you both gave. A yes, no, maybe list works too, side by side. A no is a full answer.
Your negotiation checklist
| Ask | Examples |
|---|---|
| Which poses? | Lying, seated or kneeling; nothing that hurts |
| What holds them? | Words, a blindfold, their own grip, cuffs, straps, one rope tie |
| Where can you touch? | Back, thighs, nipples, cock, pussy, ass; what's off-limits |
| Sex or no sex? | Teasing only, hands, mouths, toys, a finish or not |
| Words they love or hate | "Good," "stay," "perfect"; any mood killers |
| Signals | A stop word, a slow word, a non-verbal signal |
| Shears | Within the top's reach whenever rope is used |
| Aftercare | Water, a blanket, cuddling, a debrief or space |
A stop signal that works in a pose
Red means stop and untie now; yellow means slow down. Blindfolded or face down, your partner also needs a non-verbal signal agreed beforehand, like three quick squeezes of your hand, or three taps on the mat or bed if you aren't holding hands. Either of you can call a stop at any point, the top included. Begin only once you both give an enthusiastic yes; a yes to cuffs is never a yes to everything.
Set up the room
- Soft and warm: a mat on carpet or the bed, pillows, a blanket, maybe a firm wedge from our sex furniture collection.
- Within reach: water, your phone, safety shears for rope, and water-based lube (safe with every toy material and with condoms).
- Clear and sober: nothing underfoot to trip a blindfolded partner, and no alcohol or drugs (why).
Warm up untied
Five minutes, hands free, blindfold optional:
- Cat-cow: on all fours, round and arch the back, hands always free.
- Side stretches: sit cross-legged, reach one arm overhead and lean away, then switch.
- Reclined twist: let both knees drop to one side; the top may rest a palm on them, never pressing.
- Balasana: kneel, sit back toward the heels and fold forward, arms long.
Keep these moves gentle. Stretch further only once you're warm, and never push a stretch until it hurts (National Institute on Aging). Ease in slowly and never bounce (NHS physiotherapy guidance). You can get hurt doing yoga like any exercise, and NIH's yoga guidance says learning with a qualified teacher lowers the risk, so learn the poses untied first.
How to tie someone in a yoga pose
Climb one rung at a time, only as far as you both want.
| Level | What holds them | Gear | How it comes off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Words: "don't move" | Nothing | They move |
| 2 | Darkness | A blindfold | Lift it off |
| 3 | Their own grip | Nothing | They let go |
| 4 | Hook-and-loop cuffs | A beginner kit | One pull |
| 5 | Buckle cuffs | Padded or fur-lined cuffs | Unbuckle |
| 6 | Straps to the bed | Under-bed straps | Unbuckle |
| 7 | A bar between the ankles | Spreader bar | Unclip |
| 8 | One rope tie at the wrists or ankles | Soft rope, safety shears | Untie, or cut |
Rung 1 is verbal bondage: holding still because you were told to. Rung 8 is the simplest rope bondage. Shop the middle rungs in bondage restraints.
The rule that runs this page (our advice): a tie holds a pose. It never pulls anyone deeper into it.
Where restraints go, and where they never go
Wrists and ankles only (our advice).
- Never the neck. Nothing goes around it, not even loosely.
- Nothing on the upper arm. MedlinePlus lists pressure on the upper arm, and long or repeated constriction of the wrist (handcuffs, for example), among the causes of nerve injury in the arm, so wrist cuffs get room to spare. In a small 2023 report on rope bondage injuries (Cureus), the nerve around the middle of the upper arm was hurt in 13 of 16 injuries, and nearly all came right after people were lifted off the floor in rope.
- Short holds on the elbows. MedlinePlus lists long pressure on the elbow and keeping it bent a long time among the causes of ulnar nerve problems.
- Ankles, not shins. MedlinePlus lists long-term squeezing of the lower leg and regularly crossing the legs among the causes of a nerve injury that can numb the top of the foot or make the foot drop.
- Nothing across the hips. Mayo Clinic says pressure at the groin from tight belts, corsets and tight pants can squeeze a nerve and cause tingling, numbness and burning pain in the outer thigh.
How tight, and how to check
Leave two fingers of room under every cuff or wrap, and keep checking: they squeeze your hand, wiggle their fingers and toes, and their hands and feet stay warm and keep their usual color (our advice). Tingling, numbness, burning or a weak, clumsy hand means untie now; if it doesn't fade, see a doctor.
A fast release, every time
Shears within reach for rope, hook-and-loop or quick-release cuffs to start, and whoever tied it never leaves the room (our advice).
10 bondage yoga poses, from gentle to kinky
All ten bondage poses stay on the floor or the bed. No source gives a safe time for a tied pose, so hold each for a few breaths to a few minutes, checking in (our advice).
| Pose | What's held | Gear | Level | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy seat | Wrists in the lap | Blindfold, cuffs | Gentle | Leg cross |
| Seated bound angle | Their own feet | Blindfold | Gentle | Thighs |
| Thunderbolt kneel | Palms on the thighs | A pillow | Gentle | Pins and needles |
| Balasana | Wrists in front | Cuffs, blindfold | Medium | Knees |
| Sphinx | Wrists in front | Padded cuffs | Medium | Elbows |
| Seated forward fold | Wrists in front | Cuffs, blindfold | Medium | Fold to comfort |
| Reclining bound angle | Wrists on the belly | Cuffs, pillows | Medium | Hips |
| Happy baby | Their own feet, or a bar | Spreader bar | Kinky | Low back |
| Wide-legged seated fold | Ankles on a bar | Spreader bar | Kinky | Bar width |
| Corpse pose, spread out | Wrists and ankles | Under-bed straps | Kinky | Hands; pregnancy |
1. Easy seat (sukhasana)
Cross-legged on a cushion, spine tall, for a few minutes.
- Hold: blindfold, then hook-and-loop cuffs, wrists in the lap.
- Top: sits behind, chest to back, matching their breathing while both hands wander over collarbones, nipples and inner thighs.
- Watch: switch the leg cross halfway; never tie crossed ankles (why). Out: uncuff, legs long.
2. Seated bound angle (baddha konasana)
Soles together, knees open onto pillows, for a few minutes.
- Hold: they grip their own feet on the order "don't let go," so the yoga bind is the restraint. Add a blindfold.
- Top: kneels in front, drags fingertips over inner thighs and nipples, and praises them for holding.
- Watch: never push the knees down; no thigh ropes. Out: knees together, legs long.
3. Thunderbolt kneel (vajrasana)
Kneel and sit back on a pillow over the heels, for a few breaths.
- Hold: "Eyes down, hands still," palms on the thighs: orders and obedience at its simplest. Cuffs go in front or not at all, so they can catch a fall.
- Top: stands in front: inspection, praise, orders.
- Watch: temporary pins and needles usually comes from sitting on part of your body and lasts a few minutes (NHS); shift when it starts. Out: sit to one side. More in our bad knees guide.
4. Balasana (kneeling rest pose)
Knees wide, hips toward the heels, arms long, forehead on a pillow so the face stays free, for a few minutes.
- Hold: wrists cuffed in front, in hook-and-loop or fur-lined cuffs (9-inch faux-leather, adjustable buckle, $26.95); blindfold on.
- Top: kneels behind for slow back and ass massage (massage guide), spanking only if agreed.
- Watch: pad the knees; never tie wrists to ankles. Out: uncuff, roll up slowly.
5. Sphinx (salamba bhujangasana)
On the belly, forearms down, elbows under the shoulders, chest lifted, for a few breaths: the shortest hold here.
- Hold: wrists cuffed in front. The padded Sportsheets Edge Adjustable Handcuffs ($56.95) use a buckle you can set for wrists of 5 to 11 inches.
- Top: kneels astride their thighs without sitting on them, stroking the back and ass.
- Watch: pad the floor; untie if the little and ring fingers tingle (MedlinePlus). Out: uncuff, chest down, rest.
6. Seated forward fold (paschimottanasana)
Legs long, a pillow on the thighs, folding only to comfort, for a few minutes.
- Hold: wrists cuffed in front, resting on the shins or pillow; blindfold on.
- Top: strokes up the spine from behind, or teases feet and thighs from in front.
- Watch: never wrists to ankles and never a push on the back (our advice); never fold into pain (National Institute on Aging). Out: roll up slowly.
7. Reclining bound angle (supta baddha konasana)
Lie back, soles together, knees on pillows (never strapped open), for a few minutes.
- Hold: wrists cuffed together on the belly, or loosely to the side straps of an under-bed system.
- Top: kneels between their feet, teases the inner thighs, then edges them: close, stop, wait, again.
- Watch: nothing across the hip crease; loosen everything if the outer thigh tingles, goes numb or burns (Mayo Clinic). Out: uncuff, roll to one side.
8. Happy baby (ananda balasana)
On the back, knees toward the armpits, hands holding the outsides of the feet, for a few breaths.
- Hold: "Don't let go." Or the top holds a spreader bar cuffed at their ankles, never fastened to anything.
- Top: praises them for holding, then teases the open inner thighs and their pussy or cock.
- Watch: the low back, and knees wide of the chest so breathing stays easy. Out: let go, roll to one side.
9. Wide-legged seated fold (upavistha konasana)
Legs wide, folding to comfort or leaning back on pillows, for a few minutes.
- Hold: ankle cuffs on a spreader bar set to a width the bottom picks first: the Lux Fetish set below, the Edge Adjustable Spreader Bar (28.5 to 37 inches, cuffs sold separately, $43.95) or the Padded Spreader Bar With Restraints (30 by 5 inches, cuffs included, $148.95; check that spread untied first).
- Top: lies between their legs: mouth, fingers, a wand, edging.
- Watch: never widen the bar mid-scene; inner-thigh or knee pain means release. Out: unclip.
10. Corpse pose, spread out (savasana, starfish)
On the bed, on their back, arms and legs open like a star, a pillow under the knees, for a few minutes.
- Hold: wrists and ankles in bed restraints with slack, arms below shoulder height; blindfold on.
- Top: kneels beside them, counts their breaths aloud, then teases from the feet up with feathers and fingertips before mouth or a wand.
- Watch: tingling hands; pregnant partners skip long holds flat on the back (NIH). Out: wrists first, then ankles.
How to guide, praise and tease a held partner
A held partner can't see, reach or hurry you, so everything lands harder.
- Guide. Count their breaths aloud, cue the next pose, adjust with a light touch, and never push a stretch deeper.
- Praise. "Good. Stay right there." More in the power of praise and praise kink.
- Tease. Feathers, fingertips, then your mouth: lick slowly up an inner thigh and stop just short of their pussy or cock. A wand from our wand collection held against the clit, or along the underside of a cock, does the rest. Bring them close, back off, repeat: orgasm denial, if you both want it.
- Impact, if agreed. Drag the falls of the Sportsheets Edge Flogger ($53.95) across their back before light strokes; its listing says to keep strokes on padded muscle, away from the spine, neck and kidneys.
A 20-minute bondage yoga scene, step by step
- Before: negotiate, set signals, put the shears within reach.
- Minutes 0 to 5: the untied warm-up.
- Minutes 5 to 12: blindfold on in easy seat, hands wandering, then cuffs on in balasana for a slow back and ass massage. Check their hands and ask, "Still good?"
- Minutes 12 to 18: uncuff, move to the bed, and strap them into spread-out corpse pose with slack. Tease from the feet up and edge them two or three times.
- Minutes 18 to 20: let them come, or don't. Untie, wrists first.
- After: blindfold off, blanket on, water, aftercare.
When it isn't working
- Giggles or nerves: normal. Slow down and lean on praise.
- Cramps or aches: untie, shake it out, switch to a lying-down pose.
- No spark: drop a rung, switch roles, or call it and cuddle; stopping isn't failing.
- Someone feels off: stop, untie, and go straight to aftercare.
Poses and ties to skip
| Skip | Why | Try instead |
|---|---|---|
| Anything around the neck or throat, or that blocks breathing | Never (see below) | Kisses and fingertips on the neck; never a grip, nothing around it |
| Lifting anyone off the floor in rope | Nearly every injury in the 2023 Cureus report followed a lift | Stay on the floor |
| Head-down or balance poses while tied (downward dog, plow, tree) | A tied person can't catch themselves | The untied warm-up |
| All fours with wrists tied; bow pose | The arms are the support | Cat-cow, untied |
| Hogtie shapes (wrists to ankles behind) | Hard on the shoulders and on breathing (our advice) | Balasana, wrists in front |
| Box ties, arm binders, rope on the upper arm | The upper-arm nerve (MedlinePlus, Cureus) | Wrist cuffs in front |
| Wrists tied to ankles in a fold | Forces a stretch past comfort (National Institute on Aging) | Cuffs in front |
| Reclined hero with tied ankles | A deep knee bend with no way out (our advice) | Thunderbolt kneel |
| Thigh ropes; straps across the hips | The outer-thigh nerve (Mayo Clinic) | Hold your own feet |
| Scarves, neckties, zip ties, metal handcuffs | They tighten and won't undo fast (our advice) | Padded or hook-and-loop cuffs |
| Leaving the room; tying yourself up | Nobody to release you (our advice) | Solo: blindfold and held poses |
| Alcohol or drugs | The review below says leave them out | Sober scenes |
Deaths during BDSM are rare: a 2022 review in the International Journal of Legal Medicine found 17 published cases from 1986 to 2020, and 15 involved pressure on the neck. The authors advise keeping tools close at hand to free a tied partner fast and leaving alcohol and drugs out of it, which is why nothing here goes near the neck.
When to untie: numbness, tingling and pain
Untie first, talk second. Even untied, holding one position for a long time, sitting or standing, can cause numbness and tingling (MedlinePlus), so change poses often.
| Do this | If you notice | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Untie and change position | Tingling, numbness, burning or pins and needles in a hand or foot | MedlinePlus, NHS |
| Untie right away | A weak or clumsy hand, or trouble bending the hand back at the wrist | MedlinePlus |
| Get off the elbows | Tingling in the little and ring fingers | MedlinePlus |
| Untie and uncross the legs | A numb top of the foot or outer leg; a foot that drops or slaps | MedlinePlus |
| Loosen anything across the hips | Tingling, numbness or burning in the outer thigh | Mayo Clinic |
| Back off the stretch | Pain in a stretch | National Institute on Aging |
| Stop and sit up | Any trouble breathing, panic or faintness | Our advice |
| See a doctor | Numbness or tingling that doesn't fade, keeps coming back, or follows an arm injury | MedlinePlus, NHS |
| Get help now: a hospital or 911 | Numbness with weakness, or you can't move a hand, arm or leg | MedlinePlus |
| Ask your doctor first | Pregnant or injured | NIH (NCCIH), NHS |
| Learn the poses untied, with a qualified teacher if you can | New to yoga | NIH (NCCIH) |
Never leave a tied partner alone (our advice), not even to grab water.
Pregnant? Check with your doctor first, and skip long holds flat on your back (NIH). For pain, bleeding, an injury or any medical condition, talk to your doctor.
Aftercare after bondage yoga
Untie slowly. Rub their wrists and ankles, have them open and close their hands and circle their feet, then wrap them in the blanket with water nearby. Lie together in something soft, a spoon or a shared reclined twist, and talk: what to repeat, what to drop, what surprised you. Tops need aftercare too. Our BDSM aftercare guide goes deeper.
What the research says about bondage and yoga
| Study | Who | What it found | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joyal and colleagues, 2015 (Journal of Sexual Medicine) | 1,516 adults in Quebec | 52.1% of women and 46.2% of men had fantasized about being tied up for sexual pleasure; 41.7% of women and 48.4% of men about tying someone up | Not representative, the authors say |
| Herbenick and colleagues, 2017 (PLoS ONE) | 2,021 US adults, nationally representative, 2015 | At least one in five had been tied up by a partner or had tied someone up | Ever, not how often |
| Holvoet and colleagues, 2017 (Journal of Sexual Medicine) | 1,027 Belgian adults | 46.8% had tried one or more BDSM-related activities; restraint, blindfolds and ice-cube play were among the most common, each tried by 20% to 24% | One country |
| CDC data brief, 2024 | US adults | 16.9% did yoga in 2022 (23.3% of women, 10.3% of men) | Nothing about sex |
| Khodulev and colleagues, 2023 (Cureus) | 10 people, 16 rope bondage injuries | The nerve around the middle of the upper arm was hurt in 13 of 16 injuries; nearly all came right after a lift off the floor | Small; based on recall |
What nobody has studied: no study has looked at bondage yoga or at tying people in yoga poses, and no source gives a safe time for holding a tied pose. Every tip here is practical advice built on the nerve and stretching facts above.

Bondage yoga FAQ
What is bondage yoga?
Bondage yoga is holding yoga poses while restrained: one partner holds a floor pose and the other adds a blindfold, soft cuffs or a simple tie, then guides, praises and teases them. Also called yoga bondage, it suits any genders and pairings.
What are the best yoga poses for bondage?
Supported floor poses: easy seat, seated bound angle, thunderbolt kneel, balasana, sphinx, seated forward fold, reclining bound angle, happy baby, wide-legged seated fold and a spread-out corpse pose on the bed. Skip anything on all fours, head-down or balancing while tied.
Which yoga poses prepare your body for rope bondage?
Gentle floor stretches, done untied: cat-cow, bound angle, seated folds, reclined twists and balasana. They warm you up and show which poses feel comfortable, and cat-cow and twists always stay untied. No stretch makes anyone ready for rope on the upper arm or for being lifted.
Is bondage yoga safe?
It isn't risk-free, and nobody has studied it, but you can lower the risks. Stay on the floor, restrain wrists and ankles only with two fingers of room, keep a fast release handy, never leave a tied partner alone, and untie at the first tingling, numbness or pain.
Do you need to be flexible to try bondage yoga?
No. Every pose works at whatever depth your body likes, and a tie only holds a pose; it never pulls you deeper. Use pillows under knees and hips, fold only to comfort, and stick to lying-down poses if seated folds feel tight.
What do you need for bondage yoga?
A mat or bed, pillows, a blanket, water, and something to hold your partner: a blindfold, soft cuffs, under-bed straps, a spreader bar or soft rope, plus safety shears for rope. A beginner kit with cuffs and a blindfold covers most poses.
Can you use a yoga strap for bondage?
As a prop, yes: hold it, or loop it around your feet in a fold. As a wrist restraint, no (our advice). D-ring yoga straps tighten when pulled and don't come undone in one move. Use cuffs that open fast, like hook-and-loop or quick-release cuffs.
How tight should cuffs or rope be?
Snug enough to hold, with space for two fingers underneath and their fingers still free to wiggle (our advice). MedlinePlus names long or repeated constriction of the wrist as a cause of nerve injury in the arm, so tingling or numbness means untie now.
How long can you stay tied in a yoga pose?
No source gives a safe number, so keep holds short: a few breaths to a few minutes, checking in each time (our advice). Even untied, MedlinePlus lists sitting or standing in the same position for a long time among the causes of numbness and tingling.
What should you do if your hands go numb while tied?
Untie right away and let them open and close their hands. Temporary pins and needles usually lasts a few minutes (NHS). See a doctor if numbness doesn't fade or keeps coming back, and go to a hospital or call 911 if it comes with weakness (MedlinePlus).
Is bondage yoga the same as shibari?
No. Shibari is a decorative style of rope bondage, while bondage yoga borrows the feeling of being held and keeps it simple: a blindfold, cuffs or one tie at the wrists or ankles, all on the floor. See the Kink List's shibari and kinbaku entry.
Is bondage yoga sexual?
It can be, if you both want it to be. Some partners keep it to stillness, praise and teasing; others finish with hands, mouths or a wand. Decide before you start; either of you can still change your mind mid-scene, even after saying yes.
Can you do bondage yoga alone?
Partly. Solo, blindfold yourself and hold poses on your own count, but never tie or cuff yourself: with nobody to free you, a stuck cuff or a numb hand becomes a real problem (our advice). Save restraints for when a partner is in the room.
What does bondage mean in yoga?
In yoga philosophy, bondage is what yoga sets out to loosen. Yet one early Buddhist text uses the word yoga itself for four bonds that hold people back. Yoga also has bandhas, body "locks" named from a Sanskrit word for a bond, and binds, where you clasp your own hands.
Is BDSM the new yoga?
No. That headline came from a small university study of BDSM scenes, and the two are different things. Neither one is medicine, and this page makes no medical claims for either. Try bondage yoga because it's hot and fun to share with someone you trust.
The bottom line on bondage yoga
Keep it simple: floor poses, wrists and ankles only, two fingers of room, a fast release, and nobody left alone. Start with words and a blindfold, climb the ladder slowly, and let stillness do the teasing.
