An anal orgasm is an orgasm that comes mainly from stimulating your anus and rectum: the nerve-rich opening, the prostate if you have one, or pressure through the front wall toward the vagina and clit if you don't. People with every kind of body have them, and arousal, plenty of lube, patience and a purpose-built toy all help.
People describe anal orgasms as deeper and fuller than the ones they're used to, rolling in waves instead of one sharp peak. And if you never come from your ass alone, you're in good company: adding anal to the touch you already love is how a lot of anal orgasms happen.
Below: how it works for every body, the research, step-by-steps, positions, troubleshooting and safety. Shopping first? Jump to the best anal toys, or browse our anal toys.

What is an anal orgasm?
Short answer: a climax driven mostly by stimulation of the anus and rectum. With a prostate, prostate pressure usually does the heavy lifting. Without one, it's the opening plus pressure through the front wall. Either way, it often blends with genital touch.
Some people mean an orgasm from anal alone; others mean any orgasm where anal is the star. Both count.
Why the anus is so sensitive
The opening of your ass is one of the most nerve-rich places on your body, which is why a slick fingertip circling the rim feels so good. Deeper in, the rectum mostly senses pressure and fullness rather than light touch.
Two rings of muscle guard the entrance. You control the outer one. The inner one tightens on reflex when something arrives, then softens on its own with time, warmth and arousal; rushing it causes a lot of first-time pain. And your ass doesn't make its own lube, which explains most of the rules below.
In a US survey published in the journal Sexual Medicine in 2025, both men and women most often marked the front wall just inside the opening as the spot where touch felt best during receptive anal sex. You don't need to go deep.
The pudendal nerve also serves the clit or cock, the perineum (the skin between your genitals and your ass) and the anus, a big part of why anal and genital play feel so good together.
Anal orgasm vs prostate orgasm
A prostate orgasm is one kind of anal orgasm. The prostate is a gland just in front of the rectum, below the bladder. You reach it through the front wall, toward the belly button, about a finger's length in, where it feels like a smooth, rounded swelling, a bit firmer than the tissue around it. You can also press it from outside, through the perineum. Our guide to the best prostate massagers goes deep on prostate toys.
If you don't have a prostate
You can absolutely have an anal orgasm. You're working with three things:
- The opening. The same dense nerve endings and the same delicious stretch.
- The front wall. It sits right against the back wall of your vagina, so pressure there is felt through it, and indirectly by the internal parts of your clitoris, which are far bigger than the tip you see and wrap around the vaginal opening. The G-spot and A-spot sit on the far side of the vagina, so anal reaches them only indirectly.
- Blending. Anal plus clit or vaginal stimulation at once. More on blended orgasms below.
Trans and nonbinary bodies
Go by anatomy, not labels. Have a prostate? The prostate sections are yours, whatever your gender. Don't? The front-wall and blending sections are yours. (Some trans men and nonbinary folks say front hole for vagina: same anatomy, your words.) Many people on estrogen or testosterone say arousal, erections or orgasms feel different than before, so let your body show you what works now.
After any genital surgery, or other surgery in that area, check with your surgical team before anal play. Sensation can change after surgery and keep changing for a while, so start even slower than this guide says.
Can women orgasm from anal?
Yes. Some women come from anal alone, more come when anal is added to clit or vaginal touch, and many just like what it does to their other orgasms. Two recent studies put numbers on it:
- Pleasure is common. In a nationally representative survey of 3,017 US women, published in the journal PLoS ONE in 2022, 43.5% said some form of anal touch felt pleasurable. Among them, about 1 in 4 (27.6%) said it makes their orgasms feel more intense, and about 1 in 11 (9.2%) said they can orgasm from anal stimulation alone.
- The outside counts. In that survey, 40.3% of all the women had tried and enjoyed touch on the outside of the anus, and 34.6% touch inside.
- Blending is the bigger route. In the 2025 Sexual Medicine survey of cisgender women and men, about 1 in 5 women (19%) who had tried receptive anal sex said they could orgasm from penetration alone, and about half (49%) needed other stimulation at the same time. It counted anything a partner put inside: a finger, tongue, toy or penis.
- Not everyone gets there. In the same study, 32% of those women had never come from it, with or without extra stimulation. Nothing is wrong with you, and the tips below still help.
These tips work for anyone without a prostate:
- Arousal first. Get properly turned on before anything goes near your ass.
- Your clit at the same time. Fingers, a tongue or a toy on your clit while something is in your ass.
- The front wall. Angle fingers and toys toward your belly, just inside the opening.
- Fullness on both sides. A plug in your ass with a cock or dildo in your pussy presses both sides of the same wall.
- Patience. Early sessions are for learning the feeling.
How common is anal play?
These surveys count people, not couples, so there's no clean answer to "what percentage of couples do anal?" What research shows:
- Women. In a national US probability survey that the Journal of Sexual Medicine published in 2010, about 4 in 10 women aged 20 to 49 had had anal sex at some point, and more than 1 in 5 women aged 20 to 39 had had it in the past year.
- Men. The same survey found more than 20% of men aged 25 to 49 had had anal sex, as the giving partner, in the past year. In the 2025 Sexual Medicine survey, 17% of straight cisgender men said a partner had penetrated them anally at least once, with fingers, a tongue, a toy or a penis.
- Toys. In a 2017 PLoS ONE study of a nationally representative sample of 2,021 US adults, 18% of men and 16% of women had ever used anal sex toys.
- Fantasies. Among more than 4,000 Americans surveyed for Tell Me What You Want, the 2018 book by sex researcher Justin Lehmiller, about 6 in 10 men (58%) and women (61%) had fantasized about receiving anal sex.
What does an anal orgasm feel like?
The same sensations keep coming up:
- Fullness and pressure. First a stretch as the rim opens, then a pushy, full sensation deeper in. For many people, the fullness is the turn-on.
- The "need to go" feeling. The nerves that tell you it's time to poop respond to stretch and can't tell a toy from anything else. If you went to the bathroom first, it's almost always just that signal, and it fades when you hold still and breathe.
- Warmth and waves. Pleasure spreads from your ass into your genitals, belly and thighs, often in rolling peaks rather than one sharp one.
- Contractions you can feel. Orgasm brings rhythmic squeezes of the muscles around your anus. With something inside, you feel each one grip it.
With a prostate: a deep, warm ache builds behind your cock and balls and spreads. You might leak clear fluid, and you might ejaculate fully, a little or not at all. Your erection may come and go the whole time. That's normal: you don't need to be hard to feel it, and some people climax while completely soft.
Without a prostate: fullness that reaches into your pussy and clit from behind, especially with a toy on your clit. Some compare it to a G-spot orgasm; others say it's its own thing.
First time vs later: the first session is often more "interesting" than orgasmic. Your body relaxes faster once it knows what's coming, so judge anal on your fourth try, not your first.
Before you start: consent, hygiene and lube
Mindset, consent and a stop signal
Plan a session with nowhere to be, and make exploring the goal. With a partner, talk first: what you want, what's off the table, what worries you. You both need an enthusiastic yes, and either of you can back out whenever you want, even midway. Agree on a stop signal ("red" to stop, "yellow" to slow down, or a double tap on the thigh). When it comes, everything stops. And stay sober enough to feel everything: pain is information.
Hygiene basics
- Bathroom first if you need to go, then a shower with mild soap around your ass.
- Trim and file nails if fingers are on the menu. Gloves are optional and make cleanup instant.
- Towel down, wipes in reach, and accept that small messes happen with anal.
About douching: this guide doesn't cover it. Rinsing inside first is optional; some people like it, and for most people, using the bathroom and showering beforehand does the job. If you're considering it, ask your doctor.
Choosing lube
There's no natural lube back there, so this is the one thing you can't skip. Use more than seems reasonable, and add more before it feels dry.
| Lube | Silicone toys | Glass and metal toys | Latex condoms | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based | Safe | Safe | Safe | The default for anal; thick anal formulas add cushion |
| Silicone-based | May harm silicone toys; test a hidden spot or switch to water-based | Safe | Safe | Lasts longest |
| Oil-based | Can harm soft toy materials | Safe | Not safe: oil degrades latex | Skip it with condoms |
| Numbing or "desensitizing" products | Avoid | Avoid | Avoid | They mute pain, and pain is your stop signal |
Our go-to is Jo Anal H2O Lubricant: a thicker water-based lube designed for anal play, with no oil, wax, silicone or numbing agents. It works with toys of any material, silicone ones too, and with latex condoms. From $12.95. With glass or metal toys, the silicone version of Jo Anal lasts extra long but doesn't belong on silicone toys. From $24.95. More in our lube collection.
Starter checklist
- Thick water-based lube, open and within reach.
- A slim, flared-base toy, like the b-Vibe Rookie (below). Our anal training kits size you up in steps.
- Gloves for fingers, condoms for any toy you'll share.
- Two towels, a pillow for under your hips, and toy cleaner for afterward.
How to have an anal orgasm on your own
Your first anal orgasm is easiest to find alone, where you control every angle, speed and pause. Here's how to stimulate yourself anally:
- Get turned on first. Touch yourself the way you usually do until you're properly aroused. Never start cold.
- Get comfortable. On your back with knees bent and a pillow under your hips, or on your side with your top knee pulled up.
- Start outside. Lube a fingertip and your opening. Circle the rim slowly, press and release, stroke your perineum. Stay outside until your ass feels soft and you want more.
- Breathe out and bear down. As you exhale, push out gently, like on the toilet. That relaxes the outer ring so your fingertip slips in.
- One fingertip, then wait. Slide in to the first knuckle and stop. Feel the inner ring tighten, then soften. Waiting is the technique.
- Find the front wall. Pad of your finger toward your belly, make a slow, beckoning curl. With a prostate, feel for the smooth, firmer bump about a finger's length in. Without one, press gently along the front wall just inside.
- Swap in a small toy. A slim, flared-base toy from our butt plugs reaches farther and frees your hand. Lube it, rest the tip at your opening, breathe out and let your body take it in.
- Add vibration, low and slow. A vibrating plug or prostate toy on its lowest setting, rocking rather than thrusting. Our vibrating butt plugs are made for this.
- Bring in your genitals. Stroke your cock, rub your clit or press a wand to your vulva or shaft. Let both build and notice which one tips you over.
- Come, then come out slowly. Breathe out and draw the toy out in one smooth, unhurried pull. Stop at sharp pain, at any point.
The rule that makes everything work: move slower than feels necessary. Your inner ring relaxes on its own schedule, not yours.
How to have an anal orgasm with a partner
Same steps as solo, plus talking. Gay, straight, queer, top, bottom or vers, the receiver sets the pace.
For the receiver
- You're in charge of when, how deep and how fast. Say "slower," "deeper," "right there."
- Breathe and bear down on every entry, and use your stop signal the second something feels wrong.
- Keep your hands busy on your own cock or clit while your partner works your ass.
- Ask for the pause after each new step (one finger, two, a toy) until you say go.
For the giver
- Prep your hands: short, smooth nails, gloves if you like.
- Warm them up everywhere first, then lubed circles around the rim until they push back toward your hand.
- Let them come to you. Rest a fingertip or toy at the opening and let them press back onto it. Never push past that first ring yourself.
- Aim for the belly with slow come-hither strokes: the firmer bump if they have a prostate, the front wall just inside if they don't.
- Use your other hand on their cock or clit. This is often the whole difference.
- Check in: "More, less or the same?"
- Wash before switching from ass to pussy or mouth, or put on a fresh condom.
Two partners with prostates: finger your partner while you suck their cock, then let them ride you. Two partners with vulvas: a vibrating plug in one ass while a mouth or wand works that clit.

| One finger, come-hither | The prostate or front wall | Finding the spot | Pad toward the belly, curl slowly, never jab |
| Vibrating plug | The opening, plus fullness | Hands-free buzz during other sex | Lowest setting first; steady beats fast |

Positions that help
The angle decides whether pressure lands on the front wall. Start where the receiver controls depth.
| Position | Who controls depth | Prostate or front-wall access | Effort for the receiver |
|---|---|---|---|
| On your back, knees up | Giver (or you, solo) | Easy: the natural angle points at it | Low |
| On top | Receiver | Easy: lean back for more pressure | Medium |
| On your side, top knee up | Shared | Moderate: angle toward the belly | Low |
| Face down, pillow under hips | Giver (or you, with a toy) | Good with a toy curved toward the mattress | Very low |
| Hands and knees | Giver | Moderate: aim strokes down | Medium |
| Edge of the bed | Giver | Easy: same angle as on your back | Low |
On your back, knees up
The best place to learn solo: pillow under your hips, knees toward your chest. Your hand reaches easily. With a partner kneeling between your legs, a finger, toy, cock or strap-on angles naturally toward your front wall.
On top
Straddle your partner facing them, or a suction-cup toy on a chair or the floor, and lower yourself at your own speed. You control every inch: ideal for a first penetration. Lean back to press the front wall, and turn a suction-cup toy so its curve points toward your belly.
On your side, top knee up
The gentle one. Giver behind, receiver's top knee pulled up, strokes short and slow, angled toward the belly.
Face down, pillow under hips
Point a prostate toy or curved plug toward the mattress: that's your front wall. Grinding into the bed adds genital pressure, a sneaky-good solo move. With a partner on top, strokes stay snug and shallow; angle them slightly down.
Hands and knees
The classic, with a catch: here the front wall points down at the bed, which means a cock or strap-on that curves upward misses it. Aim slightly down, or have the receiver drop their chest to the bed. Keep strokes short; it's easy to go too deep.
Edge of the bed
Receiver on their back at the edge, legs up; giver standing on the floor. Same easy angle as on your back, and the giver's legs do the work.
Blended orgasms: adding genital stimulation
Anal and genital stimulation at the same time is how a lot of anal orgasms happen. In the 2025 Sexual Medicine survey, about half of both men (47%) and women (49%) who had tried receptive anal sex needed other stimulation at the same time to come from it.
- A wand outside. Press it to your clit or vulva while a plug is in, or to the underside of a cock or the perineum. The Magic Wand Mini Rechargeable puts deep, rumbly vibration from a 6,000 RPM brushless motor into a soft silicone head; the neck flexes, and there are three intensity settings. $96.95.
- A clit toy. A small suction toy like the Womanizer Starlet 3 (in the picks) fits in one hand. More in our clit suckers.
- Your hand, a ring or a mouth. Stroke yourself while a plug works inside, add a vibrating cock ring at the base of the shaft, or get sucked or eaten with a finger in your ass.
Keep the inside steady and let the outside build. When you start to come, leave the toy in: feeling those contractions squeeze around it is half the fun.
Anal orgasm troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| You feel nothing much | Not aroused enough, or the wrong angle | Get turned on first, aim toward the belly, stay near the opening, add genital touch |
| The "need to go" feeling | Stretch nerves reading fullness as "time to poop" | Bathroom first, then hold still and breathe; it usually fades |
| You can't relax | Nerves, rushing, a cold start | Go back to one finger, breathe out and bear down, or try another day |
| Pain at the entrance | Too fast, too little lube, too big, inner ring not ready | Stop, add lube, go smaller, wait at the tip; sharp pain means stop for the night |
| Your erection fades | Normal: attention shifts to a new sensation | Nothing's wrong; touch it if you like, or don't |
| Too intense or ticklish | Too much vibration or speed | Lowest setting, steady pressure instead of motion, or change the depth |
| The toy slips out | Pushing out, or a shape that doesn't sit well | Relax instead of bearing down, or try a plug with a narrow neck and flared base |
| It's taking forever | Normal: it takes practice | Blend in genital touch and practice over several sessions |

Safety: what's normal and what isn't
- Discomfort vs pain. Stretch, pressure and the "need to go" feeling are normal. Sharp, stabbing or burning pain isn't. Stop at sharp pain, every time.
- Spotting vs bleeding. A tiny streak of blood once can happen. Bleeding that doesn't stop, or keeps happening, means talk to your doctor.
- Flared base, always. Anything in your ass needs a flared base, handle or base that stays outside, because the rectum can pull a baseless toy up and out of reach. Vaginal toys and anything without a base stay out.
- Never ass to vagina or mouth unwashed. Wash the toy or finger with soap and water, or change the condom, first. Bacteria from the rectum can cause infections in a vagina or urethra.
- Condoms on shared toys. STIs pass through anal play, including on fingers, tongues and shared toys, and anal sex carries a higher risk than many kinds of sex because the lining is thin and can tear. Use a fresh condom on a toy for each person, a barrier for rimming, and get tested together.
- No numbing products. They hide the pain that tells you to stop.
- Talk to your doctor about pain that lingers, numbness that doesn't fade or pregnancy, and check with them first if you have hemorrhoids, an anal fissure, a bowel condition or a recent operation in the area.
- If something gets stuck inside your rectum, get medical help right away. Don't keep digging for it.
Aftercare and cleaning your toys
Afterward, drink some water and lie there feeling smug. With a partner, hold each other and trade one thing you loved and one thing to try next time. A little tenderness the next day is possible; if pain or bleeding hangs around, talk to your doctor. Then clean everything:
- Silicone toys: warm water and mild soap, or JO Refresh Foaming Toy Cleaner: cover the toy in foam, give it 60 seconds, then rinse. It works on silicone, latex and rubber, plus most other toy materials. Air dry fully.
- Metal and glass: soap and warm water, rinse, pat dry. Any lube works on them.
- Submersible (Vedo Twist, Lovense Edge 2, Lovense Hush 2, Womanizer Starlet 3): wash under running water.
- Waterproof, no IP rating (Playboy Come Hither, Aneros MGX Syn Trident, We-Vibe Ditto+): wash under the tap; skip long soaks.
- Splashproof (Nexus Revo Twist): a quick rinse, never submerged.
- No water rating given (B-Vibe Petite Rimming Plug, Vibrating Snug Plug 1): a soapy cloth, then a clean damp one, and keep the charging port dry.
- Dry before charging, and store each toy in its own clean bag or box.
Anal orgasm FAQ
What is an anal orgasm?
An anal orgasm is an orgasm that comes mainly from stimulating the anus and rectum. With a prostate, prostate pressure usually drives it. Without one, it comes from the nerve-rich opening plus pressure through the front wall toward the vagina and clit. Many anal orgasms blend in genital touch, and that still counts.
Can women orgasm from anal?
Yes. In a US survey published in Sexual Medicine in 2025, about 1 in 5 women (19%) who had tried receptive anal sex could orgasm from penetration alone, and about half (49%) needed other stimulation at the same time. Getting aroused first and adding clit stimulation during anal play both help.
Is an anal orgasm the same as a prostate orgasm?
Not exactly. A prostate orgasm is one kind of anal orgasm, driven by pressure on the prostate through the front wall of the rectum or from outside through the perineum. People without a prostate have anal orgasms too, from the opening and the front wall, often blended with clit or vaginal stimulation.
What does an anal orgasm feel like?
Usually fullness and pressure first, then warmth spreading from your ass into your genitals, belly and thighs, and an orgasm that rolls in waves. You can feel the muscles around your anus contract around whatever's inside. With a prostate, erections may come and go, and ejaculation may be full, small or absent.
Why do I feel like I need to poop during anal?
The nerves that tell you it's time to go respond to stretch, and they can't tell a finger or toy from anything else. If you went to the bathroom beforehand, it's almost always just that signal. Hold still and breathe slowly, and it usually fades. Starting smaller and slower helps.
Does anal play hurt?
It shouldn't. Stretch and pressure at entry are normal; sharp pain is your cue to stop. The usual culprits are rushing, skimping on lube, a toy that's too big or not enough arousal. Go back to a finger, add lube and slow down. Pain or bleeding that lingers is a reason to see your doctor.
How long does it take to have an anal orgasm?
Usually longer than you expect, and often several sessions before your body learns the feeling. There's no deadline. Get aroused first, keep gentle pressure near the opening and the front wall, and add genital stimulation whenever you want. It tends to get easier each time.
How far in should you go?
Only as far as feels good, which usually isn't far. In a US survey published in Sexual Medicine in 2025, men and women most often picked the front wall just inside the opening as the best spot, and a prostate is about a finger's length in. Let the receiver set the depth, never force, and use only flared-base toys.
Do you need to douche before anal?
No. This guide doesn't cover douching, and rinsing inside first is optional. Going to the bathroom first and showering is enough for most people. Small messes can happen, so put a towel down and keep wipes close. If you're considering douching, ask your doctor.
What is the best lube for anal?
Go thick and water-based: Jo Anal H2O works with silicone toys, every other toy material and latex condoms, and contains no numbing agents. Silicone lubes last longer in general and suit glass and metal toys, but they can damage silicone ones. Skip oil with condoms, and anything numbing.
What is the best first anal toy?
Something slim, smooth and flared. Try the b-Vibe Rookie Beginners Starter Plug: finger-shaped, 3.5 inches insertable, an inch across, with a flared base and a handle, for $22.95. The Vedo Twist makes a good first vibrating plug. With a prostate, the Playboy Come Hither is the natural next step.
Can you go from anal to vaginal sex?
Not without washing or a fresh condom in between. Bacteria from the rectum can cause infections in the vagina or urethra, so a cock, finger or toy that's been in an ass needs a wash with soap and water, or a fresh condom, before it goes near a vagina or mouth. Vagina to ass is the safer direction.
Ready to try?
An anal orgasm comes down to a few habits: get turned on first, use more lube than seems sensible, stay near the opening and the front wall, go slow enough for your inner ring to catch up, and add genital touch whenever you want. Then give your body a few sessions to learn the rest.
