What is an anal training kit?
An anal training kit is a set of butt plugs in graduated sizes, sometimes with extras like beads or a douche. You start with the smallest to get used to the feeling of fullness, then move up one size when the current one feels easy. You'll also see it called an anal trainer, a butt plug set or an anal dilator set. These are sex toys, not medical devices: if you need dilators for a medical reason, talk to your doctor.
What is anal training?
Anal training means getting comfortable with anal play gradually: relaxing, using plenty of lube and stepping up in size over several sessions rather than one night. It's about comfort and enjoyment at your own pace. People train for anal sex, pegging or bigger toys, or just for the feeling. Anyone with a butt can do it. With a prostate, a plug can also press near it; for targeted P-spot play, see prostate massagers.
Types of anal training kits
Graduated silicone plug sets
The MultiColor Anal Training Kit has three non-vibrating plugs in liquid platinum silicone, with tapered tips, long necks and supportive bases. Its small plug is over 2 inches insertable and about 0.96 inches wide; its large is about 3.9 inches insertable and over 1.5 inches wide. The Simply Sweet set gives each size its own texture: ribs, corkscrew spirals, then dips.
Metal sets for temperature play
For temperature play, warm or cool these plugs in water first. The Gender X Gold Digger set has rose-gold aluminum-alloy plugs with a beaded, bulbous shape, each on a wide safety base with a black gem, from 1.25 inches to 1.57 inches wide. The Playboy Pleasure 3 Ways plugs are hematite-plated metal with flared safety bases, from 1.08 inches to 1.55 inches wide, and they're waterproof and submersible.
Jeweled butt plug sets
A little sparkle at the base. The Luxe Bling Butt Plugs Training Kit has three silicone plugs with tapered tips, tight necks and heart-shaped flared bases set with faux gems. They're 2.8 inches, 4.3 inches and 5.2 inches long.
Beginner anal kits
Plug, beads and douche in one kit. The Nexus Beginner Anal Kit pairs an anal douche that holds 224 ml with a small silicone plug, 1.1 inches at its widest with about 3 inches insertable, and small silicone anal beads 0.8 inches in diameter. More anal beads.
Bondage anal training kits
The Master Series Anal Hook Trainer With 3 Plugs is for predicament bondage between consenting partners. Its 9.4-inch stainless steel hook threads onto one of three aluminum-alloy plugs, 1 inch to 1.5 inches wide, and rope ties through its O-ring. It's nickel-free metal throughout. Never unscrew the hook while a plug is inserted, and never leave a tethered partner alone. More bondage gear.
How to choose an anal training kit
- Starting size. New to anal? Pick a kit whose first plug is under about an inch wide, like the Simply Sweet (0.9 inches) or the MultiColor (about 0.96 inches).
- Size steps. See how much wider each plug gets: the Simply Sweet plugs go from 0.9 inches to 1.2 inches to 1.5 inches wide.
- Material. Silicone needs water-based lube. Metal is non-porous, takes water- or silicone-based lube and can be warmed or cooled for temperature play.
- Base. Look for a flared base. The Simply Sweet's wide flared bases double as suction cups for hands-free play and are compatible with most strap-on harnesses.
- Shape and texture. Tapered tips ease insertion. Pick smooth (MultiColor), beaded (Gold Digger) or textured with ribs, spirals and dips (Simply Sweet).
- Extras. The Nexus kit adds a douche and beads; the Master Series kit, a hook for rope bondage.
How to start anal training
- Pick a relaxed time with no rush. With a partner, agree that either of you can stop at any moment.
- Use the bathroom first. Douching is optional: if you do it, use plain lukewarm water and be gentle.
- Wash the plug, then add plenty of water-based lube to it and to you.
- Start with the smallest plug. Breathe out and ease it in slowly until it settles at the neck, base outside. Never force it.
- Keep first sessions short. Take it out gently by the base, and right away at any pain, numbness or discomfort.
- Size up only when the current plug feels easy, over several sessions.
- Wash everything afterwards and let it dry.
Cleaning, care and safety
- Flared base every time. Anything used anally needs one (beads need a handle or loop) so it can't slip inside.
- Wash plugs before and after use in warm water with mild soap or toy cleaner, and dry them fully. The Gold Digger's listing says antibacterial soap.
- Water-based lube with silicone plugs; silicone lube can damage them.
- Warm or cool metal plugs in water only, never in a freezer or boiling water, and test the temperature on your wrist first.
- Anus to vagina? Wash the plug or change its condom first.
- Skip numbing lubes. Pain is your signal to slow down.
- Stop if anything hurts, bleeds or goes numb. If it doesn't settle, talk to your doctor.
- Hook trainer: never unscrew the hook while a plug is inserted, and never leave a tethered partner alone.
Anal training kit FAQ
How long does anal training take?
There's no set timeline: it depends on your body, your goals and how often you practice. Move up a size only when the current one feels easy, and going back down a size is fine too. It's about comfort, not a deadline.
How long should you wear a training plug?
Not long at first: start with short sessions, and take it out right away at any pain, numbness or discomfort. None of the kits here lists a wear time, so let your body set the pace. Never sleep in a plug.
What's the difference between an anal trainer and a butt plug?
An anal trainer is a set of butt plugs in graduated sizes, while a butt plug is a single plug. A kit lets you start small and size up; a single plug makes sense once you know the size you like. Shopping for one? See butt plugs.
Which anal training kit is best for beginners?
One that starts small, with a first plug under about an inch wide, like the Simply Sweet set (0.9 inches) or the MultiColor kit (about 0.96 inches). The Nexus Beginner Anal Kit, put together for newcomers, starts with a plug 1.1 inches at its widest and beads 0.8 inches in diameter.
Does anal training make anal sex less painful?
It may, but it's not a guarantee. Many people find anal play more comfortable once they're used to the feeling of fullness, and going slowly with plenty of lube helps. Pain is a signal to stop, not something to push through. If pain or bleeding doesn't settle, talk to your doctor.
Do you need to douche before anal training?
No, douching is optional. Using the bathroom beforehand is enough for many people. If you'd like to douche, use plain lukewarm water and be gentle. The Nexus Beginner Anal Kit includes a douche that holds 224 ml.
Can you use an anal training kit with a partner or for pegging?
Yes, with consent and the ability to stop at once. Agree on a stop word, let whoever's receiving set the pace, and stop the moment either of you asks. The Simply Sweet plugs' wide flared bases are compatible with most strap-on harnesses, so you can use them for pegging. More strap-ons and harnesses.
