What is BDSM?
BDSM is a broad name for consensual adult play built around restraint, power exchange and sensation. The letters stand for three overlapping pairs: bondage and discipline (B/D), dominance and submission (D/s), and sadism and masochism (S/M). Think cuffed wrists, one partner taking charge, or a flogger's sting. The key is agreement: partners negotiate first, settle on a safe word, and either one can call a halt the moment they want. Plenty of people never go past soft cuffs and a blindfold.
BDSM for beginners: where to start
Start with a conversation, not a purchase. Each of you sorts ideas into yes, no and maybe later. Pick a safe word, plus a non-verbal signal (three taps, or dropping something you hold). Keep the gear simple: soft cuffs or one of our beginner bondage kits, and a blindfold. Keep early scenes short and check in often. Afterward comes aftercare: water, a blanket, a chat about what worked.
Types of BDSM toys and bondage gear
Eight kinds, from soft to serious.
Cuffs, rope and restraints
Bondage means restraining a willing partner. The padded Sportsheets Edge Adjustable Handcuffs buckle around wrists from 5 to 11 inches, and their metal tether unclips. The vegan-leather Lover's Restraints Set pairs wrist and ankle cuffs with a collar and a braided leash. No bedposts? The Under The Bed Restraint System runs six adjustable straps beneath the mattress, four ending in faux-leather cuffs. The Shots rope is 10 meters (32.8 ft) of silky line. More bondage restraints.
BDSM kits
A BDSM kit bundles matched pieces, an easy way to start. The Sportsheets Beginner's Bondage Fantasy Kit stays gentle: four hook-and-loop cuffs that release with a single pull, plus a blindfold. The Sportsheets Tied & Twisted Bondage Set adds 30 feet of rope and safety shears. The Shots City Collection Bondage Kit fits cuffs, a collar and leash, a ball gag, a flogger, an under-mattress restraint and a rechargeable bullet into one handbag.
Spreader bars and positioning straps
The aluminum Edge Adjustable Spreader Bar extends from 28.5 to 37 inches, with cuffs sold on their own; never let it bear body weight. The 30-inch Padded Spreader Bar With Restraints comes with two wrist and two ankle cuffs, and its foam core also works as a hip bolster. The Strict Arm Binder keeps the arms behind the back, strapped at the biceps and forearms (locks not included): keep scenes short, and release at once at cold, numb, tingling or discolored hands.
Blindfolds and sensation play
The Sportsheets Blackout Memory Foam Blindfold layers memory foam around recessed eye cups, so nothing presses on the lids, on a band that adjusts from 9 to 16.5 inches. The Clawed 5pc Sensation Play Rings slip five adjustable stainless steel claws over your fingertips, their rounded tips ranging from a light scratch to a firmer press. For pinching and pulling, see nipple clamps and suckers.
Impact toys
Impact play means spanking, paddling or flogging, by agreement and starting light. The Sportsheets Edge Flogger has long faux leather falls and a weighted metal handle. The Lover's Deluxe Bondage Set adds a flexible slapper, and the Lover's Deluxe Bondage Massage Set a satin paddle. Aim only at fleshy areas like the buttocks and thighs, never the spine, neck, kidneys or joints.
Electro play
Electro toys send a current across the skin. The Zeus Deluxe Edition Wand Kit pairs a violet wand with glowing glass electrodes; start at the lowest intensity, then build. The Kinklab Neon Wand has an intensity dial and four glass electrodes; keep it external, with no metal on the skin, and skip it if anyone playing is pregnant or has a heart condition or pacemaker (talk to your doctor). Never use either above the waist or across the chest. More electro sex toys.
Bondage furniture
Most of these pieces add tie-down points and hold angles a mattress can't. The Masters St. Andrew's Cross sits flat against a wall and arrives in five parts; you'll need a drill and a stud finder. The steel Obedience Extreme Sex Bench supports up to 400 lbs, the Obedience Adjustable Bondage Chair and the Kinky Couch up to 440 lbs, and the Bareback Submission bench up to 660 lbs, with six cuff points. The free-standing Throne swing needs no ceiling mount and holds up to 330 lbs.
Pup play and gear for penis owners
The neoprene Full Pup Arsenal Set has a hood with a detachable muzzle, a collar, armbands, harness and leash; the 9 Piece Deluxe set adds paw gloves and a silicone tail plug (3 inches insertable; ease in slowly with plenty of water-based lube, stop at sharp pain, never force it). For penis owners: the Strict Black Harness (a 2-inch metal ring) and the locking Caged Cougar chastity cage. Fit either snug, never tight; take the harness off after about 20 to 30 minutes, and either one off at once at pain, numbness, coldness or color change. More cock rings.
How to choose BDSM gear
- Experience. Soft cuffs and a blindfold first; rope and electro later.
- Closure. Hook-and-loop pulls apart fastest; buckles take longer; locking buckles need keys.
- Comfort. Padding or lining (the Snake Print Wrist Restraints are lined), and sizes that fit.
- Material. Vegan or PU leather, faux fur, velboa, suede-feel microfiber, neoprene, aluminum or stainless steel.
- Space. Under-the-bed straps tuck away; the cross needs a wall with studs; the Throne swing needs an 87 by 67 inch patch of floor.
- Storage. The City Collection kit comes in a handbag, and the Edge and Lux Fetish spreader bars break down.
- Weight rating. Where furniture gives a weight limit, stay under it.
How to play safely
- Negotiate likes, limits and hard no's first.
- Choose a safe word, plus a non-verbal signal for anyone wearing a gag.
- Start light: one restraint, the lowest setting, a soft touch.
- Fit cuffs so two fingers slide underneath; check hands and feet for cold, numbness, tingling or color change.
- Nothing around the neck tighter than a collar you can slide two fingers under, and nothing over the nose or mouth.
- Never leave a restrained person alone; keep safety shears and keys within reach.
- Never do bondage on your own.
- Finish with aftercare.
Cleaning and care
- Vegan and PU leather: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Suede-feel and fur: spot-clean only.
- Foam pieces: the Lover's Bondage Bench, XL Love Cushion and Deluxe Wand Saddle have machine-washable covers.
- Steel, glass and silicone: toy cleaner or warm, soapy water, then dry fully.
- Storage: dry, out of direct sunlight; check straps and buckles before each use.
BDSM toys FAQ
What BDSM toys should beginners start with?
Soft, quick-release restraints and a blindfold. The four hook-and-loop cuffs in the Beginner's Bondage Fantasy Kit pull apart in one go, and a memory foam blindfold adds suspense without strain. Add rope, impact or electro after a few short, relaxed scenes.
What is a safe word?
A safe word ends the scene immediately, no debate. Choose something that would never come up during play; many people use red for stop and yellow for slow down. Anyone gagged needs a non-verbal signal instead.
Is BDSM safe?
It can be, when everyone consents and sticks to firm rules: negotiate limits, use a safe word, start light, check circulation, keep shears handy and never leave a restrained partner alone. If pain or numbness lingers afterward, talk to your doctor.
How tight should cuffs be?
Snug enough to hold, loose enough to slide two fingers under the cuff. Cold, numb, tingling or discolored hands or feet mean release at once. Check the size range first: the Lover's Restraints Set's wrist cuffs fit 4.5 to 10.5 inches.
What is a spreader bar?
A rigid bar with cuffs or clips at each end that keeps wrists or ankles apart. On the Lux Fetish Expandable Spreader Bar Set, ring-pull pins set the length, the bar breaks into three pieces, and the cuffs detach, with quick-release clips.
What is a violet wand?
An electro toy that sends a discharge across the skin through a glass electrode, felt as a tingle or a sting. The Zeus kit is one. Keep it below the waist and off the chest; heart condition or pacemaker? Talk to your doctor first.
What is pup play?
Pup play is role play where one partner adopts a playful, puppy-like persona and another takes the handler role. Like all BDSM, it's agreed in advance. Both pup arsenal sets include a hood, collar, harness and leash.
Do I need bondage furniture?
No. Plenty of people start with under-the-bed straps and a wedge: the Under The Bed system needs no bedposts, and the XL Love Cushion is a firm foam wedge for lifting the hips. Benches and crosses can come later.
