How to choose a realistic dildo
Every listing gives you three numbers that matter more than the photo: insertable length, width (or circumference) and base type. Total length includes the base and balls, so it always reads bigger than what you'll actually feel.
- Size. For reference, the average erect penis is about 5.2 inches long and 4.6 inches around, according to a 2015 review pooling studies of up to 15,521 men in BJU International. New to dildos? Stay close to that: around 5 to 6.5 inches insertable and about 1.5 inches wide, like the slender Mustang or Dr. Grey. Ready for more? Our biggest run 9 inches long and 2 inches wide or more.
- Feel. Dual-density silicone pairs a firm inner core with a softer outer layer, so there's give on the surface and backbone underneath. It's the most skin-like feel we carry, and it's what VixSkin and the Colours Dual Density 8 Inch are made of. Single-density silicone is firmer all the way through. TPE, used in a few motorized models like the King Cock Plus, is soft and lifelike but porous, so it needs more careful cleaning.
- Base. A suction cup grips smooth surfaces like tile or glass for hands-free riding. A flat, flared base stands up on its own and sits securely in a harness. Plenty of ours do both.
- Shape. Balls add realism and give you something to hold. A curve or a pronounced head ridge, like the Johnny's, angles pressure toward the G-spot or prostate.
- Motion. Want it to do the work? Dr. Grey and Dr. Murphy vibrate, thrust and gyrate from a wireless remote, the King Cock Plus thrusts, vibrates and warms itself, and the Master Series 8X Auto Pounder thrusts from a grippy handle.
Strap-on and harness play
Most realistic dildos with a flat or suction-cup base fit a standard O-ring harness; look for "harness compatible" on the listing. Choose a firmer shaft so it doesn't bend under you, and make sure the base is wider than the ring. Harnesses and complete kits are in Strap-Ons & Harnesses.
Lube, cleaning and care
- Stick to water-based lube. It's safe with every material here, while silicone lube can damage silicone toys, and every VixSkin listing says water-based only.
- Wash after every use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner. Non-motorized 100% silicone, including VixSkin, can also be boiled. Never boil anything with a motor or anything made of TPE.
- Store them apart, each in its own pouch or bag and out of direct sun. Soft TPE in particular can react with other toy materials if they touch.
- For anal play, use only a dildo with a flared or suction-cup base that can't slip inside, plus a thicker anal lube.
Realistic dildo FAQ
What's the most realistic dildo material?
Dual-density silicone. A firm inner core under a softer outer layer gives you the surface give of skin with a solid shaft underneath, and VixSkin also warms to body heat.
What size realistic dildo should I start with?
Close to average: about 5 to 6.5 inches insertable and around 1.5 inches wide. If you already own a toy you like, measure it and go up or down from there.
Can I use a realistic dildo for anal?
Yes, as long as it has a flared or suction-cup base that can't slip inside. Start smaller than you think, go slowly and use plenty of thick, water-based lube.
Are realistic dildos harness compatible?
Many are. A flat, flared base or a suction-cup base usually fits a standard O-ring harness; look for "harness compatible" on the listing.
Can I boil a realistic dildo?
Only if it's 100% silicone with no motor, like VixSkin. Never boil TPE or anything that vibrates, thrusts or warms; wash those with warm water and soap or toy cleaner instead.
