Backshot air is slang for air that gets pushed into the vagina during sex from behind and then escapes, often with a noise a lot like a fart. It's a queef (also written backshots air or back shot air, and also called backshot wind): real, common, harmless, and on its own it doesn't smell.
So if you caught a doggy style smell, the air probably isn't the culprit. The usual suspects are an ordinary fart from either of you, sweat, or the honest scent of sex. Normal vaginal smell is normal, and none of this means anybody is dirty.
Below: the slang, the science, a smell decoder, positions that trap less air, what to say if your partner noticed, and the few signs that call for a doctor instead of a laugh.

What is backshot air?
Backshot air is a queef that happens during rear-entry sex. Thrusting pushes air into the vagina, and it comes back out as a puff, a pop or a full trumpet solo.
Cleveland Clinic calls vaginal gas (queefing, or a vaginal fart) very common and typically harmless, and Planned Parenthood calls it totally normal. Your body isn't broken. It's being a body during sex.
"Backshots," "backshot wind" and "back shot air"
- Backshots: sex from behind, vaginal or anal. This guide is about vaginal sex from behind, with a cock, a strap-on, fingers or a toy.
- Backshot air, backshots air, back shot air: the queef that comes with it. Same air, three spellings.
- Backshot wind: another name for the same air. Some joke definitions online blame the person in front. The facts don't.
The upside of backshots is obvious: deep strokes, a great view, and an angle some people swear by for G-spot play (our best G-spot vibrators guide goes deeper).
Sound vs. smell
The sound is air moving past wet, aroused tissue, and Planned Parenthood points out that wetness adds to the noise. The smell, when there is one, comes from somewhere else: see the smell decoder. And if it's more gush than puff, that's fluid, not air, and our guide to how to squirt has you covered.
Is backshot air real?
Yes, backshot air is real. No study uses the name, and no study has measured queefing by sex position. But researchers have asked thousands of women about vaginal air, and sex keeps showing up as a main trigger.
| Study | Who they asked | What they found |
|---|---|---|
| Veisi and colleagues, ISRN Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2012 | 942 women aged 18 to 80 at a gynecology clinic in Iran | 1 in 5 said air sometimes escapes from their vagina, and more than half of them (54%) said it happens during sex |
| Neels and colleagues, International Urogynecology Journal, 2020 | 570 women at a specialist urogynecology clinic | A third reported vaginal air, and 71% of those who could name a trigger said intercourse |
| Slieker-ten Hove and colleagues, International Urogynecology Journal, 2009 | Nearly 1,400 Dutch women aged 45 to 85 from the general population | About 1 in 8 (12.8%) reported vaginal noise, and most of them (72%) said it bothered them only a little |
| Hamoda and colleagues, a Cairo University journal, 2024 | About 400 Egyptian women aged 30 to 60 | Three in four had experienced vaginal air at some point, and most of those (84%) said it happened during sex |
These are clinic or regional samples outside the US, so the numbers swing a lot. Bother varies too: in the 2012 study, only about 1 in 10 of the women who queefed during sex said it bothered them, far fewer than those who queefed during everyday activities. And in the 2020 study, younger women and women with tighter resting muscles down there reported it more, so it isn't just a "loose" thing.
Short version: backshot air is real, it's common, and sex is one of its biggest triggers.
Why doggy style traps air
No study has compared positions, but the known pieces fit together. Rear entry combines them: a vagina that has expanded with arousal, thrusting that pushes air in, and pull-outs or position changes that let it out.
Arousal and thrusting
When you're turned on, the vagina expands, and Planned Parenthood points to that extra room as part of why queefs happen, along with fingers, cocks and toys pushing air in. Cleveland Clinic says in-and-out motion can push air inside: long, full strokes work like a bellows.
The arch, then a switch
Classic doggy is chest down, ass up, and nobody has tested whether that arch lets in more air. What Cleveland Clinic does say: queefing is more likely when you switch positions, and unlike a fart, you can't hold it in. Drop from all fours to flat and the trapped air gets its exit.
Bodies differ
Cleveland Clinic says childbirth and menopause can weaken the muscles that support the vagina, which can mean more vaginal gas, but it shows up in all kinds of bodies. It has nothing to do with hygiene: Cleveland Clinic says hygiene doesn't cause it and it isn't anything you're doing wrong.
Does backshot air smell? What that whiff really is
What does backshot air smell like? Nothing. A queef is plain room air. Cleveland Clinic and Planned Parenthood both say vaginal gas doesn't smell, unlike a fart. It doesn't come from the bowel, so it can't carry a smell from there.
So why does backshot air stink sometimes? Because two things happened at once: a queef, and one of the smells below. The queef is the alibi, not the suspect.
| What you notice | Most likely source | Normal? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| A puff or pop, no smell | A queef | Yes | Laugh, keep going, or pause and let it out |
| Sulfur, classic fart smell | Gas from the bowel, from either partner | Yes | Nothing to fix. Everyone farts |
| Skunky or sweaty | Sweat, especially when you're stressed | Yes | Rinse off before or after if you like |
| Slightly sour or tangy, stronger right after sex | Normal vaginal scent, plus semen, lube or condoms shifting pH | Yes | Warm water on the outside afterward |
| Coppery or metallic | Normal during your period | Yes | Nothing at all |
| Strong and fishy, worse after sex | Possibly bacterial vaginosis (BV) or trichomoniasis (trich) | No | See a clinician |
| Like rotten meat | Possibly a forgotten tampon or other object | No | See a clinician soon |
| Fart-smelling gas, or stool, from the vagina | Rarely, a fistula | No | See a doctor |
If it smelled like a fart, it probably was one
Rear entry puts a butt at the center of the action, and pressure and movement can push gas out. The National Institutes of Health says people pass gas 8 to 14 times a day on average, and sulfur in the gas may cause the smell. It could be the person in front, or the person behind, who also has an ass and is also working hard. Either way it's ordinary.
The scent of sex is a feature
Fluids, sweat, skin and lube together have a smell. That's sex. Some people find it hot, and scent and smell has its own entry in our Kink List.
Doggy style smell: normal vs. see a doctor
Mayo Clinic says the vagina usually has a mild odor, and sometimes none at all. Cleveland Clinic says a slightly sour or tangy smell can be normal, discharge can smell metallic (like copper pennies) on your period, and your scent shifts through your cycle and after exercise or sex. A pussy that smells like a pussy is not a problem to solve.
Why it can smell stronger right after sex
Mayo Clinic notes that an odor can be especially noticeable right after sex. A typical vaginal pH is between 3.8 and 4.5, and Cleveland Clinic says semen, lube and condoms can all affect it. Semen is less acidic than the vagina: a small 1997 study of 56 women in the Central African Republic, published in Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology, found that the more semen in their vaginal fluid, the higher (less acidic) its pH. With no other symptoms, Mayo Clinic says it's unlikely to be cause for concern.
Fishy, itchy or different: BV, trich and yeast
A strong, fishy smell that's worse after sex is the classic sign of bacterial vaginosis (BV), which the CDC calls the most common vaginal condition in women aged 15 to 44. Cleveland Clinic estimates about 35% of people with a vagina will get it. It isn't your fault, but Cleveland Clinic says there are no over-the-counter products that clear it.
Trich is a very common STI that can also smell fishy. The CDC estimates more than two million US infections in 2018, and about 70% of people with it have no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. Yeast infections, says the US Office on Women's Health, usually itch more than they smell, and three out of four women will have one at some point. No home remedies for any of them: see your doctor, a clinic or urgent care.
| Condition | Smell | Discharge | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Mild, tangy or sour, coppery on your period | Your usual | Nothing |
| BV | Strong and fishy, especially after sex | Can turn grayish-white, thin and watery | See a clinician for prescription medicine |
| Trich | Fishy; can come with itching, burning or soreness | Clear, white, yellowish or greenish | Get tested; both partners get treated, then retest in about three months |
| Yeast | Usually no bad smell, but extreme itching | Thick and white, like cottage cheese | See a clinician to confirm |
How to stop backshot air: positions and moves
Honest part first: nothing stops it every time. Cleveland Clinic calls vaginal gas hard to prevent, and Planned Parenthood says there isn't really a way to prevent it. Here's our advice (no study has tested it): less air pumped in, fewer chances for it to rush out.
Flatten the angle
- Lazy doggy. The person in front lies flat on their stomach; the partner behind lies over them or straddles their thighs. Bodies stay pressed together with far less hips-up tilt.
- Wedge under the hips. A firm foam wedge like the XL Love Cushion gives a supported lift instead of the full arch, and it doesn't squash mid-scene.
- Bent over the bed. The person in front folds forward over the edge of the mattress. Less arch, easy grinding.
- Spooning from behind. Both on your sides, tucked in tight. The slowest, closest backshots there are.
Keep contact
Less in-and-out, less air pushed in. So pull out less.
- Grind, don't piston. Stay deep and rock in small circles. The person in front can push back and grind too, and grinding has its own Kink List entry for a reason.
- Shorter strokes. Keep most of the cock or toy inside and move an inch or two.
- Fewer full pull-outs. Each one is another chance for air to get in.
- Stay connected during switches. Stay inside and move together, or keep a hand on them while you reset.
Use enough lube
Lube won't stop air by itself, but enough glide lets you grind slow and deep instead of hammering. Keep it unscented. Water-based lube like JO H2O pairs with condoms and any toy material. Silicone lube lasts longest, but it can ruin silicone toys: use water-based with those, or patch-test first if the label allows it. Oil and latex condoms don't mix, and oil degrades soft toy materials too. Browse our lube collection.
If it happens anyway
Laugh (Planned Parenthood's advice is basically to laugh it off), keep going, or pause: slide out slowly, let the air go, add lube and slide back in close. Or switch to hands for a bit; mutual masturbation is a great reset. What not to do: stop everything to apologize, or make a face.
Your first low-air doggy session, step by step
- Agree on the rules. "If I queef, we laugh and keep going." Get a clear, enthusiastic yes.
- Pick a stop word and a signal. Face down, you can't read faces, so add two taps on the bed. Stopping is always allowed, for either of you.
- Warm up and lube up. Foreplay first, then lube on the cock or toy and the vulva.
- Start flat and stay close. Lazy doggy or the wedge, short strokes, grinding.
- Check in out loud. "Good? Slower? Deeper?"
- Switch together, then do aftercare. Move as one, then rinse off, cuddle and name one thing that felt great.
When it's worth asking a doctor
If backshot air bothers you, or air escapes often when you're not having sex, talk to a gynecologist. Your doctor can tell you whether exercises like Kegels, or a physical therapist who works with the muscles that support the vagina, make sense for you. Most of the time, Cleveland Clinic says, vaginal gas needs no fixing at all. And never blow or push air into a vagina on purpose; Cleveland Clinic is firm on that.

Toys and gear for smoother backshots
You don't need gear for any of this, but a few things make flatter, slower, closer doggy style feel better.
| Pick | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| JO H2O | Unscented glide that works with every toy | from $12.95 |
| JO Premium | Long sessions with skin, condoms and non-silicone toys | from $24.95 |
| Bedroom Bliss XL Love Cushion | A flatter, supported angle | $163.95 |
| Lovense Diamo | Buzz while you stay deep and grind | $118.95 |
| JO Refresh Foaming Toy Cleaner | Cleaning toys afterward | $15.95 |
1. JO H2O Personal Lube: the everyday glide
Water-based, yet it stays silky and slick for a long time, the way people expect silicone to feel, and never gets sticky. It's odor-free with no fragrance, so it adds glide without adding a smell. Use it with any toy, silicone ones too, and with latex condoms. It washes away with water and won't leave marks on your sheets. Bottles run from 2 to 16 oz, from $12.95. Want a backup? Elbow Grease H2O Maxxx is another unscented, condom-safe water-based lube, from $6.95.
2. JO Premium: the long-haul silicone lube
When the plan is slow, deep and long, silicone keeps going. JO Premium is a water-resistant silicone lube made for a long-lasting glide. It has no preservatives and no odor, it won't stain, and it's fine with latex condoms. The one catch: never use it with silicone toys, because it bonds to the surface. From $24.95.
Get the JO Premium Silicone Lube here.
3. Bedroom Bliss XL Love Cushion: the flatter angle
Pillows squash. This large, firm wedge of high-density foam holds a lift without sinking, so the person in front can lie forward with their hips supported instead of holding a steep arch. It's 29.5 by 19 inches and 10 inches high, with a velvety-soft cover over a water-resistant inner layer, and both covers come off and go in the washing machine. $163.95. More in our sex furniture collection and the sex furniture Kink List entry.
4. Lovense Diamo Cock Ring: buzz for staying close
Staying deep and grinding is the core anti-air move, and this ring rewards it. A motor sends focused vibration into the wearer's perineum, and leftover buzz carries through the ring so both of you feel it. Wear it at the base, and staying deep keeps it where your bodies meet. App-controlled from a phone by either of you, IPX7 waterproof, 2.5 to 3 hours per USB charge, 1.75-inch inside diameter. Take it off if anything feels numb, cold or painful, and talk to your doctor if numbness lingers. $118.95.
Rather wear the buzz inside? Try the We-Vibe Sync 2 ($135.95): the wearer has it in during sex, and a partner feels it too. See more cock rings, our best cock rings guide, and vibrator play with a partner.
5. JO Refresh Foaming Toy Cleaner: the after-party
Nobody's favorite toy, but a smart habit. Foam it up, let it sit for 60 seconds, and rinse. There's no fragrance and no residue, and you can use it on silicone, rubber or latex toys and most others. It's a cleaner, not a sterilizer. 7 oz, $15.95.
Get the JO Refresh Foaming Toy Cleaner here.
Stay fresh without wrecking your pH
Your vagina cleans itself; the US Office on Women's Health says it does that naturally by making mucus. Your job is the outside, and less is more.
What actually helps
- Warm water on the vulva and groin, plus a little mild, unscented soap on the outside if you like (Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic).
- A pre-sex rinse, if it makes you feel good. Butt crack, groin, thighs. For confidence, not because anything is wrong.
- Cotton underwear, which Cleveland Clinic recommends because it won't hold in heat and moisture.
- Wipe front to back, a basic from MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine's health site.
- Condoms, used the right way every time, which the CDC lists as a way to lower your risk of BV and trich.
The anal-to-vaginal rule
Rear entry puts the ass right next to the action, and things slip. Never go from anal to vaginal, with a cock, fingers or a toy, without a fresh condom or a wash first, because it moves bacteria that can cause infection. Cleveland Clinic's advice is to avoid vaginal contact with anything that has touched the anus. If anal is on the menu too, see our beginner's guide to anal training.
What to skip, and why
Almost 1 in 5 US women aged 15 to 44 douche, even though most doctors advise against it, according to the US Office on Women's Health. Skip these:
| Skip | Why |
|---|---|
| Douching, or putting anything inside the vagina to change its smell | The US Office on Women's Health says douching only covers up odor briefly and is linked to BV, STIs and irritation |
| Vaginal deodorants | Mayo Clinic says they may make odor worse and cause irritation |
| Perfumed washes, scented soaps and bubble bath | Britain's NHS lists perfumed products in or around the vagina as a BV risk |
| "pH-balancing" washes and gels | Cleveland Clinic says no over-the-counter product clears BV, and scented products can alter your pH |
| Feminine sprays, fragrances and powders near your genitals | MedlinePlus says to avoid them, since chemicals can cause itchy rashes |
Diet, water and probiotics
You'll find long lists of foods to cut and probiotics to take for vaginal smell. There's no good evidence that any of them changes it. If a smell worries you, the US Office on Women's Health says to talk to your doctor or nurse.
After sex: getting rid of the sex smell
Good sex leaves evidence. Here's how to get the smell of sex off your body, your toys, your sheets and the room:
- Rinse the outside. Warm water on the vulva, cock, balls, ass and thighs. The inside of the vagina doesn't need washing.
- Wash your hands, especially after anything anal.
- Wash the toys with warm water and a little soap, or foam them with JO Refresh. Let them dry fully.
- Swap the sheets, and next time put a towel down first.
- Air out the room. Open a window or run a fan.
- Then do aftercare. Water, a blanket, a cuddle. The smell can wait.
If a vaginal smell is still strong, or lasts several days, that's a see-your-doctor sign, not a scrub-harder sign.
If your partner noticed, or you did
Some people searching "doggy style smell" are the person in front, mortified. Some are the person behind, wondering how to say something without being a jerk. Both are welcome.
For the person it happened to
Backshot air is air, not dirt. Cleveland Clinic says vaginal gas isn't caused by hygiene and isn't anything you're doing wrong. If there was a smell, it was most likely a fart, sweat or plain sex scent, and none of that is a character flaw. Laugh, keep going, and ask for the flatter version next time if you like.
For the partner who smelled something
Make it easy. Something light, or nothing, is the right move. Don't make a face, don't joke at their expense, and don't play doctor. If a strong, fishy smell keeps coming back, say so kindly and privately and suggest getting checked together. Trich passes between partners, so if one of you tests positive, you both get treated.
| Moment | Try this | Not this |
|---|---|---|
| A queef mid-backshots | "Ha. Keep going." | Freezing, then going quiet |
| You smelled a fart | Nothing at all. Carry on | "Ew, what was that?" |
| You're the one who's embarrassed | "Well, that was loud. Don't stop." | "I'm so sorry, I'm disgusting." |
| A strong fishy smell keeps coming back | "I've noticed a stronger smell lately. Want to get checked together?" | "You smell. Go fix it." |
Awkward talks get easier when you also talk about the fun stuff. Take the Kink Test together (it only shows the yeses you share), or go through our printable Yes No Maybe List over coffee.
When to see a doctor about a smell
Backshot air on its own doesn't need a doctor. These do. See your doctor, a gynecologist, a clinic or urgent care for:
- A strong or fishy vaginal smell, or one that lasts several days.
- Discharge that changes to gray, thin, green, yellow, frothy, or thick and white like cottage cheese.
- Itching, burning, swelling or soreness, pain when you pee, or pain during sex.
- Fart-smelling gas, stool or pus from the vagina, or frequent UTIs.
- Vaginal air that happens often outside of sex.
- A smell like rotten meat, which can mean a forgotten tampon or other object.
- Signs of BV while pregnant. The CDC links BV in pregnancy to early delivery and low birth weight.
BV and trich need prescription medicine from a clinician; no douche, wash or spray will clear them. Rarely, fart-smelling gas or stool from the vagina can mean a rectovaginal fistula, an abnormal opening between the vagina and rectum, most often after a birth injury (Mayo Clinic). That needs a doctor, not a hygiene routine.
Backshot air FAQ
What is backshot air?
Backshot air is slang for a queef during sex from behind: air pushed into the vagina during doggy style that escapes, often with a fart-like sound. It's also called backshot wind or back shot air. Cleveland Clinic calls vaginal gas very common and typically harmless, and on its own it doesn't smell.
Is backshot air real?
Yes. No study uses the slang or measures it by position, but vaginal air is common and sex is a major trigger. In a 2012 study of 942 women at an Iranian gynecology clinic, 1 in 5 reported vaginal air, and 54% of them said it happens during sex.
What does backshot air smell like?
Nothing. It's plain air, and Cleveland Clinic and Planned Parenthood both say a queef doesn't smell. If you noticed a smell at the same moment, it most likely came from a fart from either partner, sweat, or the normal tangy scent of sex. A strong fishy smell is worth a visit to your doctor.
Why does backshot air stink sometimes?
Because something else happened at the same time. The air is odorless, so a stink usually means an ordinary fart, sweat, or fluids and lube mixing. A strong, fishy smell, especially after sex, can be a sign of BV or trich, and that needs a clinician, not a spray.
What is backshot wind?
Backshot wind is another name for backshot air: the queef that can happen during sex from behind. Same air, same sound, no smell on its own. Ignore joke definitions that blame the person in front. It happens in all kinds of bodies, and Cleveland Clinic says hygiene doesn't cause it.
Is backshot air a queef or a fart?
A queef. It comes out of the vagina, and it's room air pushed in during sex, not gas from the bowel, which is why it doesn't smell. A fart comes from the butt, can smell of sulfur, and can happen to either partner. The two can land close together, which is where the confusion (and the jokes) come from.
Why does doggy style smell?
Doggy style puts butts, sweat and fluids front and center, so you notice smells that are there in any position: a fart, sweat, or the tangy scent of sex. Rear entry can also cause queefs, which make noise but don't smell. A strong fishy or rotten smell is the exception and means see a doctor.
Does backshots mean anal sex?
Not necessarily. Backshots is slang for sex from behind, which can be vaginal or anal. Backshot air usually refers to vaginal sex from behind, since that's where queefs come from. If you do both, never move from anal to vaginal without a fresh condom or a wash first.
How do I stop queefing during doggy style?
You can't stop it every time (Cleveland Clinic calls it hard to prevent), but here's what we'd try. Flatten the angle: lie on your stomach, use a wedge under your hips, or bend over the bed. Grind with short strokes instead of full pull-outs, and use plenty of unscented lube.
How do you prevent air build-up during sex?
Less pumping, fewer gaps. Cleveland Clinic says in-and-out motion can push air inside and switching positions makes queefs more likely, so stay deep, keep strokes short, and move together when you switch. If it bothers you or happens often outside sex, talk to a gynecologist.
Why does my vagina smell after sex?
Semen, lube and condoms can all affect vaginal pH, and Mayo Clinic notes that odor can be especially noticeable right after sex. Add sweat and fluids and you get the normal sex smell. With no other symptoms, it's unlikely to be a concern. A strong, fishy smell means see a clinician.
Does semen make your vagina smell different?
It can, for a while. Semen is less acidic than the vagina, and a small 1997 study of 56 women found more semen in vaginal fluid meant a higher pH. That's one reason your scent can change after sex. A strong fishy smell after sex is different: it's a classic sign of BV.
Is a fishy smell after sex normal?
A strong fishy smell isn't the normal kind. The CDC lists a strong fish-like odor, especially after sex, as a symptom of bacterial vaginosis, and trich can smell fishy too. Neither is your fault, and both need a clinician and prescription medicine, not a home remedy.
Should I douche or use a feminine spray before sex?
No. The US Office on Women's Health says douching only covers up odor for a short time and is linked to BV. Mayo Clinic says vaginal deodorants may make odor worse, and MedlinePlus says to avoid hygiene sprays. Warm water on the outside, plus mild unscented soap if you like, is all you need.
How do you get rid of the sex smell after sex?
Rinse the outside of your body with warm water, wash your hands, clean any toys, swap the sheets, and open a window or run a fan. A shower handles your skin. Skip scented sprays on your genitals, and if a vaginal smell lasts several days, see your doctor.
The bottom line on backshot air
Backshot air is a queef with a slang name: real, common, harmless and odorless on its own. If doggy style smells, it's usually a fart, sweat or the honest scent of sex, and none of those is a problem. Flatten the angle, stay close, lube up, laugh when it happens, and save the doctor for fishy, rotten, itchy or painful.
