What are sex handcuffs?
Sex handcuffs are cuffs made for consensual restraint play: padded, lined or soft straps that close around the wrists (or ankles) with a buckle, hook-and-loop or a clasp, and join with a chain, tether or clip. You'll also see them called bondage cuffs, sex cuffs, BDSM cuffs or restraint cuffs. This page also has wrist and ankle cuff sets, a hog tie, spreader bars and thigh cuffs.
Handcuff safety basics
Cuffs run on trust, so talk first: what you'd both like, and what's off-limits. Pick a safeword that stops everything at once, plus a non-verbal signal, like a hand signal or dropping an object, for when someone's gagged. Keep the release within reach. Check circulation often: fingers and toes warm, normal color, no numbness or tingling. Numbness or cold means off, now. Never leave a cuffed partner alone. Nothing goes around the neck for tying, and a collar or leash never bears weight or restricts breathing.
Types of sex handcuffs and bondage cuffs
Fuzzy and furry handcuffs
Made with first-time wrists in mind. The Sex & Mischief Peaches 'n CreaMe Fur Handcuffs, our one fur-lined pair, are 9-inch faux-leather cuffs lined in peach faux fur with a subtle shimmer. They have an adjustable buckle, a secure clasp and rose gold plated, nickel-free hardware with a 5.5-inch connecting chain.
Padded handcuffs
The Sportsheets Edge Adjustable Handcuffs are padded for extended wear, with reinforced stitching and an adjustable buckle closure for wrists from 5 to 11 inches. The metal tether comes off, and sturdy rings connect them to other restraints and bondage gear. They're 80% polyurethane, with silver hardware.
Wrist cuffs and restraints
The Spartacus Organo Silicone PU Wrist Restraints are vegan-friendly; wipe them down after every session. The Snake Print Wrist Restraints, also from Spartacus, have a soft lining in each cuff, golden, nickel-free hardware and a secure locking buckle. Neither listing gives a size.
Wrist and ankle cuff sets
The 6-piece Master Series Velvet Bondage Set is suede-feel vegan microfiber in burgundy and gold: wrist and ankle cuffs, a collar, a leash and gold chains, with 5 D-rings. The vegan-leather Lover's Restraints Set has wrist and ankle cuffs, a collar with a braided leash and 2 cuff connectors. Both buckle to fit. More bondage kits.
Hog ties and spreader bars
A hog tie links wrists and ankles; a spreader bar holds them apart. The Velvet Noir Hog Tie & Cuff Set has hook-and-loop cuffs for wrists or ankles up to 12.5 inches, 45-inch tethers and a connector with 8 D-rings. Keep hog ties short: they strain shoulders and breathing. The Lux Fetish Expandable Spreader Bar Set adjusts in length with ring-pull pins; its cuffs detach. More bondage restraints.
Thigh cuffs
The Strict Thigh Sling with Wrist Cuffs is a wearable sling: thigh straps draw the knees toward the chest, padded wrist cuffs hold the wrists, and an adjustable back strap sets their height. The thigh cuffs fit 13 to 23 inches, the wrist cuffs 5 to 9.5 inches. It's PU leather with metal hardware and locking buckles (padlocks not included).
How to choose sex handcuffs
- Feel. Faux fur (Peaches 'n CreaMe), padding (Edge), Organo Silicone PU, suede-feel microfiber (Master Series) or vegan and faux leather (Lover's Restraints, Padded Spreader Bar).
- Release. Hook-and-loop (Velvet Noir) is easy to undo, and the Lux Fetish cuffs have quick-release clips. Buckles take longer, and the snake-print and thigh-sling buckles can lock.
- Fit. Listed wrist ranges: 4.5 to 10.5 inches (Lover's Restraints), 5 to 11 inches (Edge), 5.75 to 9.25 inches (Master Series) and up to 12.5 inches (Velvet Noir). The Organo and snake-print restraints list no size.
- Hardware. Sensitive to nickel? The Peaches 'n CreaMe, snake-print, Master Series and Lover's Restraints listings say nickel-free.
- Connections. Chains, tethers, D-rings and O-rings link cuffs to each other or to other gear. To anchor cuffs to a bed, see bondage restraints.
How to use handcuffs during sex
- Talk about what you both want and what's off-limits.
- Agree on a safeword and a hand signal; stop the moment either is used.
- Start with wrists cuffed in front: it's easier on the shoulders.
- Fasten each cuff snug, with room to slip a finger underneath.
- Keep the release, and any key, within reach.
- Check in often. Release at once at numbness, tingling, cold or a color change, and never leave a cuffed partner alone.
- Uncuff, then take time for aftercare: water, a blanket, a talk about what you liked.
Cleaning, care and safety
- Wipe vegan leather and PU with a damp cloth, plus unscented soap for stains.
- Spot-clean suede-feel microfiber and wipe the metal.
- Wipe Organo Silicone PU cuffs after every session.
- Store cuffs dry; check stitching, buckles, clips and chains before each use.
- Release at numbness, tingling or cold; if it doesn't fade, talk to your doctor.
Sex handcuffs FAQ
What are fuzzy handcuffs used for?
Light, playful restraint: soft faux fur against the skin makes them an easy first try at bondage. Ours, the Peaches 'n CreaMe Fur Handcuffs, are 9-inch faux-leather cuffs lined in peach faux fur. Agree on a safeword first, and keep the release within reach.
Are sex handcuffs safe?
They can be, with consent and care. Pick padded or lined cuffs that fit, agree on a safeword and a hand signal, check circulation often and never leave a cuffed partner alone. Numbness that doesn't fade? Talk to your doctor.
How tight should sex handcuffs be?
Snug, with room to slip a finger under each cuff. Too tight restricts circulation; too loose lets a cuff slip and rub. Check the listed fit first: the Edge handcuffs fit wrists from 5 to 11 inches. Release at once at any numbness, tingling or cold.
What's the difference between handcuffs and wrist restraints?
How the cuffs connect. Handcuffs come joined by a chain or tether, like the Peaches 'n CreaMe's 5.5-inch chain; wrist restraints are often cuffs you clip to each other or to other gear. The Edge handcuffs do both: the tether comes off, and sturdy rings connect them to other restraints.
What are ankle cuffs used for?
To restrain the ankles: linked together, held apart on a spreader bar or joined to the wrists in a hog tie. The Master Series set's ankle cuffs fit 7.5 to 10.75 inches, the Lover's Restraints Set's 6.25 to 10.5 inches, and the Velvet Noir cuffs fit wrists or ankles up to 12.5 inches. The Padded Spreader Bar With Restraints comes with 2 ankle cuffs.
What are thigh cuffs?
Bondage cuffs that wrap the thighs to hold the legs in position. Ours come on the Strict Thigh Sling, which draws the knees toward the chest; its thigh cuffs fit 13 to 23 inches. Its wrist cuffs sit along the back, which is harder on the shoulders, so keep sessions short.
How much do sex handcuffs cost?
On this page today, single pairs run from $26.95 to $70.95, and sets, the hog tie, the thigh sling and spreader bars from $58.95 to $168.95. New to cuffs? The fur-lined Peaches 'n CreaMe pair, at $26.95, is the lowest-cost way to try them.
