What is BDSM?
BDSM is an umbrella term for consensual kink that plays with power, restraint and sensation. The letters stand for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. Partners agree on limits and a safe word first, and either can stop at any time; without consent, it isn't BDSM. BDSM toys and bondage gear are the tools: restraints, blindfolds, floggers, collars, chastity cages and furniture.
Types of BDSM toys and bondage gear
Cuffs and restraints
The Sportsheets Edge Adjustable Handcuffs are padded and buckle to fit 5- to 11-inch wrists; the Spartacus Snake Print Wrist Restraints have a soft lining and a locking buckle. More sex handcuffs.
Bondage kits
Bondage kits bundle matching pieces. The Sportsheets Beginner's Bondage Fantasy Kit pairs four hook-and-loop cuffs, which come off in one pull, with a blindfold; the vegan-leather Lover's Deluxe Bondage Set adds a collar and leash, ball gag, slapper and hogtie connectors.
Spreader bars and under-the-bed restraints
The Under the Bed Restraint System slides under any mattress, with six adjustable straps, four with faux-leather cuffs. The aluminum Edge Adjustable Spreader Bar holds wrists or ankles apart, extending from 28.5 to 37 inches (cuffs sold separately). More bondage restraints.
Blindfolds, gags and sensation play
A blindfold turns every touch into a surprise. The Sportsheets Blackout Memory Foam Blindfold has recessed eye cups, so there's no pressure on the lids. The Clawed rings put five steel talons on your fingertips. More in ball gags and nipple clamps.
Impact play
Spanking, paddling and flogging. The Sportsheets Edge Flogger has long, supple faux-leather falls on a weighted metal handle, from a soft drag to a sharp lash. The padded steel Obedience Extreme Sex Bench is built for bondage and impact play.
Collars, leashes and pup play
A collar and leash make the power exchange visible. The Spartacus Organo Silicone PU Collar & Leash is a beginner-friendly set; the neoprene Full Pup Arsenal Set adds a hood with poseable ears and a detachable muzzle, armbands and a chest harness.
Chastity cages and ball stretchers
A locking chastity cage puts the keyholder in charge. The stainless steel Caged Cougar comes with three ring sizes and two keys; the Master Series Lockdown is lightweight, see-through plastic. The aluminum-alloy Ball Trap is a weighted ball stretcher.
Electro-play
Electro-play uses electric current for sensation. The Kinklab Neon Wand runs from a warm tingle to a sharp sting, with an intensity dial and four glass electrodes. The Zeus Deluxe Edition Wand Kit is a violet wand with glowing glass attachments.
Bondage furniture
Sex furniture holds a partner in position. The Masters St. Andrew's Cross mounts flat to the wall, and the Throne Adjustable Sex Swing comes with its own stand, no ceiling mount needed. Bondage chair with a thrusting machine? See sex machines.
How to choose BDSM toys
- What you want to feel. Restraint, sensation, impact or power play? A kit like the Lover's Deluxe Bondage Set covers all four.
- Beginner-friendly. Start with a blindfold or soft cuffs that open in seconds, like hook-and-loop ones.
- Materials. Many pieces here are vegan leather (PU); others use microfiber, neoprene, silicone, aluminum or stainless steel.
- Fit. Check the listed sizes for cuffs, collars and chastity rings.
- Furniture. The big pieces cost the most, so check the weight limit and footprint: the Throne swing holds up to 330 lbs on an 87 by 67-inch base.
How to use BDSM toys safely
- Talk first: likes, limits and hard no's.
- Choose a safe word, plus a hand signal for when talking isn't possible.
- Start light: a blindfold, soft cuffs, the lowest setting.
- Fit restraints snug, with room for a finger underneath.
- Check in often; watch for tingling, numbness, cold or color change.
- Never leave a restrained partner alone; keep keys or safety shears handy.
- Finish with aftercare: water, warmth and a talk.
Cleaning, care and safety
- Release at once at numbness, tingling, cramping, cold, color change or trouble breathing; keep shoulder-straining arm binders and hogties short.
- Nothing tight on the neck: collars loose, never yank a leash, no breath play.
- Impact. Strike only padded muscle, never the spine, neck or kidneys.
- Electro. External only, no metal touching skin, never across the chest; skip it if anyone playing has a pacemaker or heart condition, or is pregnant. Unsure? Talk to your doctor.
- Chastity and furniture. Keep a spare key; remove a cage or ball stretcher at pain, swelling or numbness. Assemble furniture as listed; respect weight limits.
- Clean by material (see the FAQ) and dry everything fully.
BDSM toys FAQ
What does BDSM stand for?
Bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. Bondage is restraint; discipline is rules and consequences. Dominance and submission is one partner taking control as the other gives it up. Sadism and masochism mean giving or receiving intense sensation, by agreement.
What is bondage gear?
Anything used to restrain or position a consenting partner: cuffs, rope, under-the-bed straps, spreader bars and furniture with attachment points. BDSM toys include all that, plus blindfolds, gags, floggers, collars, chastity cages and electro wands.
What is a bondage kit?
A set of matching pieces, often cuffs or rope plus a blindfold, gag, collar or flogger. First kit? Look for soft cuffs that come off fast, like the hook-and-loop ones in the Sportsheets Beginner's Bondage Fantasy Kit.
How do you use bondage restraints?
Slowly, after you've agreed on limits and a safe word. Start with soft wrist cuffs, snug with room for a finger underneath. Check in often, free your partner at once at numbness or tingling, and never leave them alone.
What is a safe word?
A word that stops play at once, no questions asked. Many people use traffic lights: green means keep going, yellow means slow down or check in, red means stop. With a gag in, agree on a hand signal instead.
How do you clean BDSM toys?
By material, after every use. Wipe vegan leather with a damp cloth and dry it fully. Wash silicone and stainless steel in warm, soapy water; the Caged Cougar can even be boiled. Spot-clean neoprene, and machine-wash covers only where the listing says.
