What is a cock ring?
A cock ring, also called a penis ring, C-ring or erection ring, is a snug band worn around the base of the penis, or the penis and balls. It lets blood flow in but slows it flowing back out, so an erection can feel firmer and fuller for a while. Many add a vibrator to buzz you, a partner or both.
Types of cock rings
Stretchy cock rings
The simplest kind: a soft loop that stretches on and off, so it's an easy first ring. The Screaming O Ohare XL is a roomier Ohare, with an extra-stretch silicone band, a rechargeable bullet (5 speeds and a pulse) and rabbit ears aimed at a partner.
Adjustable rings and lassos
Set the fit yourself, and loosen it fast if you need to. The Nexus Forge Single Lasso has a slide-to-fit lasso toggle and 6 vibration modes: wear it above the shaft to hum against a partner, or below your balls for your perineum.
Vibrating cock rings
A motor on the ring buzzes you and, during sex, often your partner. The Vedo Overdrive has a curved tip, one-button control and a 45-minute run time. The My Pod Enhancer charges in a magnetic case whose UV light sanitizes it in 20 minutes.
Remote and app-controlled rings
Hand someone else the controls. The Super Silicone Cock Ring with Remote runs 4 speeds from its remote. The Lovense Diamo pairs with the Lovense app over Bluetooth, so a partner can drive it near or far. More in app-controlled toys.
Cock and ball rings
These go around your shaft and behind your balls. The Trinity 10x Taint Stim adds bumpy ball cups and a vibrating perineum pad, with 3 speeds and 7 patterns on a remote. To buzz the balls themselves, try our own AdultLuxe Ballsy. More ball vibrators.
Perineum and prostate rings
Some reach further back. The Vibrating Silicone Cock Ring and Anal Stimulator adds a slim 0.7-inch prostate probe and a second motor for your perineum and balls. The B-Vibe Snug & Tug pairs a ring with a weighted, vibrating butt plug. More in prostate massagers.
Couples cock rings
Worn during sex, these put vibration where a partner feels it. The Trinity Cobra's two flexible prongs flick and vibrate against the clit, with 10 patterns. The Zero Tolerance Mr. Flicker adds a flicking tongue and over 250 vibrating nubs. More couples sex toys.
How to choose a cock ring
- Fit. Stretchy and adjustable rings are easiest to get on and off, so start there. Fixed ones, like metal rings, must fit exactly.
- Material. Most of ours are silicone, some with ABS parts. Both are non-porous and easy to clean.
- Controls and charging. Buttons are simplest. A remote lets a partner drive nearby, and some apps, like the Lovense Diamo's, work near or far. Most of ours recharge over USB.
- Who it's for. Motors, prongs and ears on top tease a partner; pads, probes and plugs are for you.
- Budget. Start simple, then upgrade to app control once you know what you like.
How to use a cock ring
- Wash it, and charge it if needed.
- Add a little water-based lube to the ring and to you.
- Put it on soft or semi-hard: slide a shaft ring down to the base, or ease your balls through a cock and ball ring one at a time, then your shaft.
- Point a vibrating ring's motor up toward a partner, or down toward your perineum.
- Start low and watch the clock: take it off within 20 to 30 minutes, shaft first, then balls.
Cleaning, care and safety
- 20 to 30 minutes, max. Never sleep in one, and take it off right away at any pain, numbness, tingling, coldness or color change.
- Wash it after every use with warm water and mild soap or toy cleaner. Submerge only IPX7 or submersible rings, and never boil one with a motor.
- Use water-based lube. Silicone lube can damage silicone rings.
- Anal play. Anything that goes inside needs a flared base, handle or retrieval loop, and a wash (or a fresh condom) before it moves from anus to vagina.
- Talk to your doctor first if you have a bleeding or circulation condition, take blood thinners or have erection problems.
Cock ring FAQ
What does a cock ring do?
It slows blood flowing back out of your penis, so an erection can feel firmer and fuller for a while. Many also vibrate, buzzing you, a partner's clit or your perineum, and a few add a prostate probe or plug.
How do you wear a cock ring?
Around the base of your shaft, or around your shaft and balls (balls go through first, one at a time). Put it on soft or semi-hard with a little water-based lube. Wear a vibrating ring motor-up for a partner or motor-down for you.
Do cock rings work?
For many people, yes: a ring can help an erection feel firmer and fuller. Do they make you last longer? Some people find they stay firm longer, but results vary. A toy ring isn't a treatment for erectile dysfunction, so if that's a worry, talk to your doctor.
How long can you wear a cock ring?
About 20 to 30 minutes at a time, as the Screaming O Ohare XL and Nexus Forge listings say. Take it off right away at any pain, numbness, tingling, coldness or color change, and never fall asleep wearing one.
How tight should a cock ring be?
Snug but never painful: it should stay put without pinching and come off easily. Pain, numbness or coldness means it's too tight or has been on too long, so take it off. An adjustable ring like the Nexus Forge lets you fine-tune the fit.
What if a cock ring gets stuck?
Don't force it or try to cut it off yourself. Add plenty of water-based lube and ease it off, shaft first, then balls. If it won't come off, your erection won't go down, or you have pain, numbness or a color change, get emergency help now.
Are cock rings safe?
Yes, for most people, used as directed: choose one you can remove easily, keep it to 20 to 30 minutes and take it off at any pain or numbness. With a bleeding or circulation condition, blood thinners or erection problems, talk to your doctor first.
